Focus areas for 4‑H healthy living programs include nutrition, childhood obesity, drug awareness, bullying prevention, health and fitness, safety, stress management, and food science. Programs are designed to help 4‑H youth learn about living a healthy lifestyle through fun, hands-on activities and projects and are available through schools, 4‑H clubs, and camps.
The New York State (NYS) 4-H Healthy Living program engages youth and families through hands-on educational activities that promote a culture of health and well-being within a positive youth development framework. Rooted in the ecological model of Urie Bronfenbrenner, our Healthy Living program is a holistic one that emphasizes nutrition and fitness, social-emotional wellness, and prevention of injury. Choose Health is an initiative of the Cornell Cooperative Extension and NYS 4-H, with a primary focus on healthy eating and active living among youth, families, and communities.
The Healthy Living program benefits from a strong partnership among Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Nutrition and 4-H Educators. The Youth Healthy Eating and Active Living Program Work Team (Y-HEAL PWT) is such a partnership that guides Healthy Living programming in 4-H and beyond.
