Farmland Protection: The Real Work Begins!

  • Friday, February 19, 2016, 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County will host a workshop February 19, 2016 for farmland owners interested in farmland protection. ‘Farmland Protection: The Real Work Begins!’ will focus on preparing landowners to move forward with the process involved in farmland protection programs.

The workshop will be held Friday February 19, 2016 at the New York State Fairgrounds in the Wegman’s Demonstration Kitchen located in the Art and Home Center Building. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and the program runs from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for the workshop is $10 per person and $15 per family, payable at the door. Light refreshments will be available.

The workshop will cover the basics of farmland preservation, conservation easements, landowner commitment, and available farmland protection programs. There will be an emphasis on the Onondaga County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board’s pre-proposal application for the NY State Department of Agriculture and Markets Farmland Protection Implementation Grant Program (FPIG). The pre-application is designed to screen farmland owners interested in applying for the FPIG Purchase of Development Rights program.

Although it is not known when the State may release a Request for Proposals for the FPIG program, landowners can be prepared by completing the pre-proposal application. The Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board will review the applications from which selections will be made to complete a formal application.

Please register by contacting Melanie Palmer at (315) 424-9485 extension 228 or email at mjp232@cornell.edu.
