USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and Animal Disease Traceability - New Requirements for Cattle and Bison
APHIS is amending the animal disease traceability regulations to require that eartags applied on or after a date 180 days after publication (April 30,2024) in the Federal Register of this final rule be both visually and electronically readable in order to be recognized for use as official eartags for interstate movement of cattle and bison covered under the regulations.

"A premises identification number (PIN) or location identifier (LID) is a unique code that is permanently assigned to a single physical location. PIN or LID registration is administered by each State and allows animal health officials to quickly and precisely identify where animals are located in the event of an animal health or food safety emergency. A PIN or LID is required to purchase official animal identification tags."
In NYS you may request a Premises Identification Number (PIN) or LIN for cattle and bison at by call 518-457-3502 and ask for Ms. Erin Bond (preferred) or email the request to: erin.bond@agriculture.ny.gov"
