Bed #1: Swiss Chard

Bed #1

Swiss Chard

Friends: Swiss chard loves fennel, cilantro, beans, garlic, carrots, oregano, marigolds, and onions.

  • Fennel and cilantro attract beneficial predatory insects like hoverflies and wasps that eat pests.
  • Beans fix nitrogen which provides an essential nutrient for chard.
  • Garlic and onions prevent mildew and emit strong odors that deter pests.
  • Carrots need different nutrients (potassium and phosphorus) so they don’t complete with chard.
  • Oregano and marigolds have a strong scent which repels pests

Foes: Swiss chard dislikes spinach and beets.

  • Spinach and beets are from the same plant families and attract the same pests.
