Field Biology Technician - Temporary

Start Date: April 1, 2024, to September 30, 2024, $27.00/hr
Location: Onondaga County, NY

Job Description:
Primary duties include, but are not limited to, tick surveillance in Onondaga County, NY. This will involve driving to field sites (mainly private lands and parks), communicating with on-site staff as needed, and collection of ticks and environmental data in the field. Assist Cooperative Extension staff with tick identification and tick education programming.


Perform tick and environmental monitoring tasks:

  • Accurately record date, time, location, label vials
  • Take measurements of temperature and moisture, humidity
  • Use drag mat to search for and collect ticks, remove ticks from mat and store in vials
  • Identify and sort tick specimens
  • Organize and prepare specimens to be mailed to Cornell AHDL for testing
  • Protect from tick bites by wearing appropriate clothing and repellents
  • Assemble tick removal kits on days when tick collecting weather is not good (rain)

Requirements: Applicants must have a driver’s license and car available to them for the duration of work. Mileage will be reimbursed. Applicants must have the ability to walk long distances on a daily basis and be willing to encounter ticks/mosquitoes/unfavorable weather conditions, while taking precautions to avoid bites. Applicants must be very dependable and have the ability to work independently and productively with minimal daily supervision. Training, supervision, and PPE will be provided.

SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator - Full time

This position will serve as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-ED) Nutrition Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Onondaga County and will implement SNAP-ED programming for a menu of existing SNAP-ED educational programs and program activities. This position will implement already-existing educational programming to the public to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among low-income families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout the designated programming area. This position will be responsible for the delivery of established SNAP-ED programming to community groups and will deliver other established SNAP-ED programming and activities, both on-site and off-site, in the community, in accordance with the Nutrition Program Area’s Plan of Work. This position will also coordinate all administrative aspects of the SNAP-ED Program and will assist the Nutrition Issue Leader with marketing efforts for SNAP-ED programming, to include the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other Nutrition Program Educators of the SNAP-ED Program in the Central Region.

Facilities Coordinator & Administrative Assistant - FT

This position will serve as the Facilities Coordinator and Administrative Assistant and will assist in planning, managing, coordinating and maintaining the Association’s grounds and facilities. This position will assist with the development, implementation and oversight of the facility’s usage, maintenance schedule and long-range facility plans. This position will conduct regular safety trainings for relevant staff, and perform moderately-complex administrative tasks, including evaluating, ordering and inventorying supplies. Will assist in ensuring safety regulations are followed. The Facilities Coordinator and Administrative Assistant will be responsible for coordinating and communicating routine/emergency maintenance, meeting set-up, and outside facility use on an on-going basis. This position will represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the general public, community leaders and government officials in a professional manner. Will appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with clientele, staff, volunteers, and the public.

This position will also provide administrative support to meet the needs of the Association. Program area assignments may change based on Association needs and funding availability. This position will be responsible for the overall clerical support to the assigned programs and program areas to include, but not limited to: adhering to strict timeframes for reporting purposes and accountability; providing a variety of typing/word processing (i.e. letters, correspondence, brochures, reports, newsletters, office forms and/or technical papers that require familiarity with technical terminology); collecting and sending Association mailings; using a variety of software packages and functions to edit, format, produce, and display information; creating, implementing, and maintaining worksheets and databases; handling general record keeping; performing routine data collection, compilation, and/or basic statistical data computation; scheduling and/or arranging meetings, appointments and travel; and providing administrative support for special projects as assigned. This position will also work in collaboration with administrative and program staff to provide general office and reception support, and minor banking tasks as necessary.
