Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Training and Snowshoe Hike!

  • Sunday, March 8, 2020, 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Come learn about HWA and how you can help protect the Skaneateles Lake watershed from HWA, an invasive insect that can kill Eastern Hemlock trees, which is an important tree species for protecting water quality. This event will feature training on iMapInvasives, a portal that allows citizen scientists to help track HWA. Steve Kinne, CNY HWA-Hunters Team will speak about what HWA is and how to identify it. A snowshoe hike will follow the training, and will show how to identify hemlocks and HWA.

HWA had previously been found only on the west side of Skaneateles Lake, but has recently been discovered on the eastern side. Citizen scientists can help track the spread of HWA, which is valuable for management of infested hemlocks. This event is intended to help train citizen scientists in the watershed who will be able to assist with efforts to protect watershed hemlocks.
