Family farms are the backbone of New York’s economy, food supply, and rural communities, but the challenges they face are more complex than ever. Across Onondaga County, farms are facing hard truths: costs are rising, markets are unpredictable, and many families have not yet mapped out how their farm will carry on to the next generation. Nationally, nearly one-third of farms don’t have a written business or succession plan, and the average farmer is now over 58 years old. Without new strategies, too many family farms could be at risk of closing their doors.
To help local farmers build resilience and thrive, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County (CCE Onondaga) is hosting a Farm Business Management Symposium. This one-day program will bring together farmers, agricultural advisors, and business experts to provide practical strategies for improving profitability, managing risk, and planning for the future.

"This event is about ensuring that farms don’t just survive, but thrive," said Janet Oppedisano, Agriculture Team Leader at CCE Onondaga. "We want to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools that make long-term sustainability possible."
Research from Cornell University and the USDA highlights the stakes: without careful planning, many small and midsize farms face serious financial pressures. But farms that invest in the addition of value-added product production, business management, and transition planning are far more likely to remain profitable, competitive, and resilient.
Farmers, farm families, and agricultural partners are encouraged to register today to reserve their spot.
