Hippology is an equine knowledge contest that evaluates the overall knowledge of the participants in equine science, vet science and farm management. Somewhat like a laboratory practicum test, where contestants go from station to station. 4-H Youth maybe asked to identify anatomy, breeds, and the pieces and parts of a saddle and other equipment. Other contest components include a judging phase, a 100 question written exam, team problems. There are three divisions: Novice (under 14 yrs. and never have competed before), Junior (8-13 yrs.), and Senior (14-19 yrs.). Regional level activities qualified members to go onto State and National levels. Regional Hippology is done on Horse Bonanza Day in Madison County in March.
In 2012 New York’s team placed 6th in the written phase, 7th in the station phase and 8th overall at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, KY.
