2024 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Resource Page

CCE Onondaga will update this resource page with the latest information about HPAI.

8/5/24 Information from the Onondaga County Health Department about HPAI:

The Onondaga County Health Department is reaching out to share information regarding the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), referred to as H5N1, that is widespread on dairy farms in many U.S. states.

  • Multiple cases of human infection with H5N1 have been reported over the past several months in the U.S. All were in dairy farm workers, and all had mild, self-limited symptoms. However, people have experienced severe respiratory illness and death in other outbreaks around the world. To-date, there have been no humans or cattle reported infected with H5N1 in New York State.
  • NYSDOH has produced a video "Avian Influenza on Dairy Farms: Keeping Workers Safe", which includes information and resources to help combat HPAI once it is detected in a dairy herd. There are links to resources, including information for native Spanish speakers, opportunities to prepare by accessing personal protective equipment (PPE), and additional training options.
  • Frequently Asked Questions provide additional information on transmission, and how to best protect farmworkers.
  • If you, or workers on your farm have been exposed to H5N1, please contact the Onondaga County Health Department, Bureau of Disease Control, at (315) 435-3236.
